MARQUETTE — The Superiorland Kiwanis has honored a pair of Marquette Senior High School students as its athletes of the month for September.
Sophomore Ericka Asmus is a sophomore on the girls cross country team, while junior Drew Gale is a member of the varsity football team.
Asmus has finished as the Redettes’ top finisher in each race this fall, cracking the top five overall in all five Upper Peninsula-based races. Two were victories at the Dale Phillips Invitational in Marquette and Dale Fountain Invite in Stephenson.
In 2016, Asmus was the champion runner in the Great Northern Conference meet as well as a MITCA all-state Division 1 runner.
In the winter, she excels with the Superiorland Nordic Ski Team.
Asmus carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and last school year received the L.G. Kaufman Endowment Award as well as an Excellence in Education Award from U.P. Health System-Marquette.
Asmus is leaning toward attending Michigan Tech University with an interest in environmental science.
Gale, as a running back, had accumulated 1,026 rushing yards through the first seven games of this season, averaging nearly 150 yards per contest, and also scored 13 touchdowns. He has been listed as a leading candidate for U.P. Player of the Year.
As a sophomore last year, Gale earned All-GNC honorable mention honors as a varsity player.
Scholastically, he earned an MSHS Academic Achievement Award last spring.
After high school, he would like to play college football while studying computer science or sports medicine.
