906 Adventure Team earns podium spots

MARQUETTE — Members of the 906 Adventure Team bikers picked up a number of spots on the podium at the first two races of the season in the Wisconsin High School Cycling League.

The Marquette-based group that includes students from several area high schools brought 19 competitors to the Sept. 10 opener at Minooka Park in Waukesha, where more than 400 athletes from 50 teams took part.

Eight podium places were claimed by 906, along with seventh place for the quartet riding as the Marquette Senior High School team — freshman Erin VanderSchaaf, sophomores Louis Hindman and Jacey Johnson and senior Charlie Ruuska.

Earning first-place honors were Lucas Basal in sixth-grade boys and Carson VanderSchaaf in seventh-grade boys.

These are the other podium finishers — Johnson, 3rd place, sophomore girls; Corbin Grimm, 4th, sixth-grade boys; Caden Holm, 4th, sophomore boys; Erin VanderSchaaf, 4th, junior varsity girls; Hindman, 5th, sophomore boys; and Colin VanderSchaaf, 5th, seventh-grade boys.

A week later, 21 racers from the 906 team competed at Nordic Mountain in Mount Morris at the Nordic Navigator.

The MSHS team composed of Hindman, Johnson, Ruuska and sophomore Wyatt Clement finished third out of 40 teams in Division 2, while eight more individual earned podium spots.

Basal again won the sixth-grade boys division, while Colin VanderSchaaf did the same among seventh-grade boys.

Other podium places went to Grimm, 2nd, sixth-grade boys; Holm, 3rd, sophomore boys; Carson VanderSchaaf, 3rd, seventh-grade boys; Haylie Clark, 4th, sixth-grade girls; Johnson, 4th, sophomore girls; and Erin VanderSchaaf, 4th, JV girls.
