Miller stars for Purple Hornets boys

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain dominated at the Upper Peninsula Division 2 regional meet on Friday.

The Mountaineers boys and girls swept the championship trophies with comfortable margins as their teams combined to win 17 events.

The girls team won with 74 points. West Iron County took second with 42, followed by Hancock with 32, Ironwood 23, L’Anse 11 and Norway 1.

The boys scored 64 1/2 points and were followed by Norway with 35, Ironwood 34.5, West Iron County 21, L’Anse 19 and Hancock 13.

Foster Miller was the star of the meet for L’Anse as he won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.55 seconds and 200 in 23.37 while taking second in the discus.

Boys teammate Cooper LaPlante as second in the 800 and Reese Waara fourth in the 400 to also qualify for the U.P. Finals on Saturday, June 2, in Kingsford.

In addition, the Purple Hornets were fourth in the boys’ 800 and 1,600 relays to also make the finals.

In the girls meet, L’Anse’s Izzabelle Martinez was runner-up in the 400, as were the Hornets’ 400 and 800 relays. And teammate Hunter Pelonm was third in the 100 hurdles.
