Brewer 7th, Lagrou 8th at state wrestling finals

By Journal Sports Staff

DETROIT — Two area wrestlers who advanced to second day of the MHSAA Individual Tournament finished in seventh and eighth places.

Both junior Nathan Brewer of Westwood and sophomore Joe Lagrou of Marquette had dropped into the consolation bracket on Friday, where they still had a chance to finish as highly as third place in a set of tournaments at Ford Field in Detroit that included nearly 900 wrestlers.

Brewer, the area’s lone champion at the regionals held two weeks ago, split his pair of matches on Saturday in the 112-pound division of Division 4.

He opened with a 6-0 loss to Christian Zimmerman of Westland Lutheran, placing him in the seventh-place match, where he defeated Zach Ouilette of Oscoda 8-1.

Lagrou lost both his matches Saturday at 103 pounds in Division 2, losing a close 3-1 match to Carter Hinson of Zeeland East, and in the seventh-place match, losing to Bailey DeLaTorre of Stevensville Lakeshore 6-1.

They were the only area wrestlers to post multiple wins on Friday, which was needed for them to continue on Saturday.

Two other area wrestlers each got one win Friday — Sam Gilles of Westwood in Division 4 at 189 and Nathan Magnusson of Newberry in D-4 at 135.

Eleven area wrestlers finished in the top four at regionals to qualify for the state finals, with 10 actually taking part and wrestling on the Ford Field football surface.
