NEGAUNEE — So far so good for the Negaunee High School girls tennis team.

The defending U.P. Division 1 champions chalked up their second straight 7-1 victory over a quality opponent on Friday, beating West Iron County at home.

Their two wins have come against Westwood, which shared the U.P. Division 2 title last fall with Munising, and the Wykons, who finished just two points shy of the co-champs at the D2 finals.

“West Iron is really athletic, so it was good to have to work and finish long points,” Miners coach Kyle Saari said.

He noted the efforts of No. 2 singles player Jenna Sager and No. 4 doubles team Faith Toutant and Jillian Skewis. Sager won 6-3, 6-3 over WIC’s Colbi Laturi, while Toutant and Skewis scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kali Dennis and Livea Mazurek.

“Jenna hit some nice angles today and our No. 4 doubles team of Faith and Jillian has given us good chemistry and consistency at that flight,” Saari said.

In fact, every flight in the match finished in straight sets. The Miners’ only loss came at No. 1 singles, where the Wykons’ Katarina Serbentas recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Megan Syrjala.

Negaunee gets back on the courts at 11 a.m. Tuesday with a road trip to Ishpeming, marking the first of three straight days of matches that concludes with the Westwood Invitational on Thursday morning.
