Redmen fall to Brother Rice, 5-2

By Journal Sports Staff

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Marquette Senior High School hockey team got a lesson in how the game is played among the big schools in the metropolitan Detroit area on Friday night.

Playing on the first night of the Sault Ste. Marie Lions Showcase, Birmingham Brother Rice skated off with a 5-2 victory.

On Friday, the Warriors’ Michael McInerney took a while to heat up, but finished with a three-goal hat trick along with an assist.

Marquette senior Spencer Samppala opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 3:31 into the game, but Brother Rice’s Will Duncan answered with a power-play goal less than four minutes later.

The Warriors dominated the second period, scoring twice and limiting the Redmen to just one shot on goal.

Marquette sophomore Sean O’Connor notched another unassisted goal, this one on a power play, not quite four minutes into the third period to pull his team within 3-2.

But McInerney answered with a goal barely a minute later and another about four minutes after that to create the final margin.

Redmen junior goalie Dylan Sibilsky finished with 20 saves.
