Munising, Marquette end regular seasons with wins

MUNISING – Munising completed a perfect high school volleyball season in the Skyline Central Conference with a three-set victory at home over Superior Central on Thursday evening.

The Mustangs prevailed 25-13, 25-6, 25-14, to improve to 14-1 overall and 9-0 in league.

Marissa Immel led Munising offensively with 10 kills as she also had seven digs. Teammate Kianne Wendt made eight kills, four service aces and 14 digs, while Michaela Peramaki had five kills, two solo blocks and four digs, and Bailey Downs had 25 set assists, nine digs and a kill.

The Mustangs also won the JV match in two sets.

Munising will take part in the MHSAA Class C district tournament at Gwinn next week, opening against Ishpeming at 6 p.m. Tuesday. A win there would put the Mustangs in the district championship at 7 p.m. Thursday against Gwinn or Negaunee, who play in Tuesday’s second semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

Marquette 3, Escanaba 0

At Marquette on Tuesday, the Redettes closed the regular season with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 victory in a Great Northern Conference match.

For MSHS, Hannah Bulinski had 23 digs, Caitlin Palomaki and Aurora Mlsna each with six kills, Kellsey Grange five aces and Chloe Hale 25 assists.

“It was an emotional night for our seniors,” Marquette coach Mike Morgan said about honoring team members who were finishing their playing days. “The crowd was loud and into the match and the girls were able to use that energy to close out Escanaba.”

Seniors honored were Bulinski, Grange, Mlsna, Chelsea Wiggins and Mikayla Miilu.

Marquette will participate in what is an unusual “traditional” Class A district next week with all matches to be played at Traverse City West. The rest of the field is composed of five Lower Peninsula schools.

The Redettes face TC Central in a quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday. If they win, they return downstate on Saturday morning for a semifinal match against Alpena with the championship set for that afternoon.
