MARQUETTE – Negaunee claimed both “individual” titles and the boys team title while Marquette was crowned girls team champion at the Marquette County Relays cross country meet held at Marquette Senior High School on Monday afternoon.
The word “individual” doesn’t quite describe the racers since a pair of teammates worked together to produce one time. Each member of a duo ran three one-mile legs to come up with a six-mile time on what was described as an almost perfect running day with cloudy skies and 60-degree temperatures.
The Miners who won were Colton Yesney and Thomas Ziegler in 30 minutes, 2 seconds in the boys race and Emily Paupore and Clara Johnson in 35:03 in the girls race.
With three duos contributing to their team score, Negaunee also placed fourth and fifth to record 10 points in the boys meet to 15 for Ishpeming, 22 for Marquette, 71 for Westwood and 78 for Gwinn.
Marquette got second, third and sixth to total up 11 points in the girls meet. Negaunee was runner-up with 20, followed by Ishpeming with 23 and Westwood 37.
Yesney and Ziegler beat out the Hematites’ Spencer Giroux and Grady Kerst by 15 seconds as they clocked 30:17.
In third was Marquette’s Luke Rambo and Garrett Rudden in 31:00, while Negaunee had Ethan Wallner and Elliot Prusi in fourth in 31:34 and Eric Anderson and Mitch LaBelle in fifth in 32:22.
Westwood’s top finishers were Andrew Dieterle and Carter Guidebeck, 20th in 37:20, and Gwinn’s were Ethan Parson and Jacob Porubsky, 21st in 37:23.
In the girls race, Paupore and Johnson won by over a minute as the Redettes’ Becci McNamee and Amber Huebner were runners-up in 36:15.
In third was another MSHS pair, Chloe Henning and Ericka Asmus, in 38:13, fourth was Ishpeming’s Kayla Kaukola and Khora Swanson in 39:54 and fifth was Westwood’s Kassy Carlson and Amanda Matznick in 40:16.
