Vikings sink shorthanded Carney-Nadeau, 64-12

BARAGA – The Carney-Nadeau Wolves football team came to Osterman Field in Baraga Friday night without their two top players: Jordan Belec and Brett LaFord.

With an undermanned team, playing against a fired-up Vikings squad who had senior Casey Chagnon back, and featured a three-headed monster in the backfield in senior Kollin Kangas, junior Joey Francois and sophomore Deven Funke, the Wolves found life difficult as the Baraga trio ran rampant over the Wolves en route to a 64-12 win.

“We blocked really well tonight,” said Vikings head coach Eric DeMink. “Having Casey Chagnon back was a huge plus. We had actually almost a full team tonight.”

The Vikings took advantage of the depleted Wolves from the opening kickoff when Kangas took off once he picked up the ball and got into Wolves’ territory before he was finally dragged down at the 38-yard line. Four plays later, Francois snuck out left and ran 20 yards for a touchdown. Francois then added the 2-point conversion.

After the Vikings’ defense held stout despite the Wolves’ Arturo Rangel attempting a pair of passes to receivers who were open but missing both, Baraga’s offense got back to work.

The Wolves’ defense surrendered a 27-yard run to junior Dominic Ripley, who struggled with an illness most of the week, setting the Vikings up just 6 yards away from the end zone. Ripley then rolled out left before pitching to Funke, who eased in for the score. Kangas picked up the 2-point conversion to give the Vikings a 16-0 lead.
