WHS suffers diamond sweep
KINGSFORD – The Westwood High School girls softball team has traveled to both Kingsford and Manistique for doubleheaders so far this week and ended up dropping all four games.
On Tuesday, the Patriots lost to the Flivvers 16-6 in the opener and 18-12 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Megan Pohlman took the loss in the circle. She gave up 17 hits and struck out four.
Mady Mattias and Destiny Bullard both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Westwood finished with seven hits.
In the second game, Hannah Salmi got tagged with the loss. She gave up 15 hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Shae Blewett went 4-for-5 for the Patriots, while Mattias had three hits. Salmi and Marissa Carello both had two hits for Westwood.
On Monday in Manistique, the Patriots fell 7-4 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.
In the opener, Salmi took the loss. She allowed eight hits and five walks, while striking out seven.
Blewett, Carello and Pohlman all went 2-for-4 for WHS, with one of Blewett’s safeties being a solo home run.
Allie Nagy backed winning hurler Amanda Menominee with three hits. Menominee gave up 11 hits while fanning eight.
In the second contest, Pohlman shouldered the loss, allowing six hits and a walk, while striking out seven.
Pitcher Breiann Richey tossed the shutout for Manistique. She gave up two hits and fanned seven.
