Redettes pick up two wins in Wisconsin

KIMBERLY, Wis. – The Marquette Redettes soccer team finished off a three-match weekend with a Saturday split.

Marquette dropped the first game to Kimberly (Wis.) 6-0, but bounced back to defeat Winneconne (Wis.) 2-1.

Kayce Mullett and Erica Cousineau scored for the Redettes in the Winneconne game, while Sara Iwanicki picked up an assist on Mullett’s tally.

Marquette goalie Molly Gaudreau made 9 saves against Winneconne and saved 14 of 20 shots against Kimberly.

“Kimberly is a solid team and we just didn’t get to the ball first,” Marquette head coach Meredith Ollila said. “In the game against Winneconne, it was a more evenly matched and we finished with a good win. It was nice to finish that way.”

On Friday, Marquette earned a dominant 13-0 win over Milwaukee Riverside (Wis.) and nine players scored for the Redettes. Sierra Carlson, Emily Burbey, Mikayla Miilu and Abby Kroll each scored two goals. Cousineau, Lexi Guidebeck, Bethany Wright, Sierra Pearson and Caitlin Palomaki each picked up one goal.

“High scoring games like this are not the norm at this level of play, but we took the opportunity to really focus on linking our passes together and hitting targets moving off the ball in our forward line,” Ollila said.

Ollila is pleased with how the year has started and is happy that her squad might get to practice outside again.

“The full field makes a world of difference and nothing compares to it,” she said. “Hopefully, the weather will stay nice and we can get our offense going on some grass runs.”
