Copper Kings dismantle L’Anse in district finale

CALUMET – Calumet added another banner in its small but growing list of girls district championships in its gym on Wednesday after dismantling L’Anse 67-19 at home.

Junior Hailey Wickstrom led Calumet (22-0) with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while senior Clara Loukus chipped in with 11 points.

Calumet led from start to finish and dominated in stretches.

First, it was Wickstrom, a 6-foot-2 forward, who dominated the paint in the first half on her way to scoring 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds before the intermission.

L’Anse’s man-to-man defense held Calumet in check for much of the first half, and Purple Hornets senior Lauren Elmblad made it a 10-point game, trimming Calumet’s lead to 21-11 with under three minutes left in the first half.

Then, the Copper Kings took over and Loukus capped a 7-0 run with a 3 from the left wing to give Calumet a 28-11 lead into halftime.

“That sucked the gas right out of us,” L’Anse head coach Scott Lloyd said of Loukus’ 3. “Being down 12 or 14 at halftime wouldn’t have been that bad of a spot to be in, but when you get to 17 or 18, that’s a whole lot different.”

In the third quarter, the Copper Kings amped up the aggressiveness and continued to pile it on, outscoring L’Anse 24-0 and forcing the Purple Hornets into seven turnovers.

L’Anse (8-14)?turned it over 28 times, part of the reason it only had six shots in the first half.

Elmblad led L’Anse with seven points.
