MARQUETTE – The Upper Peninsula Swimming & Diving Championships for high school athletes will be held today and Saturday at Marquette Senior High School’s six-lane pool.

Today’s events are exclusively the diving, starting at 2:35 p.m. for girls preliminary and final rounds. After a short warm-up, the boys competition follows.

Swimming starts at 10:05 a.m. Saturday with events running in the order of a regular meet, alternating boys and girls in each event, with a tentative conclusion set for around 4 p.m.

There is a single division for the 10 U.P. schools that take part in Michigan High School Athletic Association competition – Marquette, Gladstone, Kingsford, Sault Ste. Marie, Ishpeming, Jeffers, Houghton, Rudyard, Westwood and Manistique.

Six of those are cooperative programs – Ishpeming is in a co-op with Negaunee, Gladstone with Escanaba, Kingsford with Iron Mountain, Jeffers with Hancock, Sault Ste. Marie with Brimley and the Rudyard boys with Pickford.

Admission is $10 each day with no reserved seats in the limited bleachers balcony above the pool and also in the school theater with a live video feed. There will be food and refreshments available along with a vendor selling souvenir apparel at the school.
