Emeralds cruise to easy home victory

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique boys had little trouble with the Engadine Eagles Monday night as they cruised to a 63-25 basketball victory.

Manistique led 21-2 after the first quarter of the non-conference outing.

“They were down to six guys,” said Emeralds’ coach Ed Marietti. “We pressed them and made them run a little more than they wanted to. We took the press off in the second quarter. They hit some shots and we missed a bunch, then we put the press back on in the third quarter.”

The Emeralds (5-8) led 27-12 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 27-3 in the third stanza.

Tyler Tobin led Manistique with 18 points. Jake Arnold and Jordan Turan added 12 apiece. Nick Price scored 13 for Engadine (1-13).

“Tyler made some 3s early and got some easy buckets off the press in the third quarter,” said Marietti. “We ran the court a lot better tonight than we had.”

Manistique held a 46-19 rebouding advantage, hit 25-of-67 field goals and committed 20 turnovers. Engadine converted 8-of-42 shots and had 25 miscues.

The Emeralds, who also won the jayvee contest 45-26, host Westwood in a make-up game Wednesday. The Eagles host Rudyard Monday.
