Echols

BAY CITY — It’s still early in the season, but the GLIAC might want to consider just handing its Player of the Week award to the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team for the rest of the season as on Monday, a Wildcat claimed the award for the fourth time in five weeks.

This time though, it was Naba Echols who took home the honor this week after the award had been won by teammate Isaiah Johnson the previous two weeks in a row.

Echols averaged 21 points per game in NMU’s last two outings, scoring 20 in Thursday’s blowout 108-69 win over Purdue Northwest.

He also racked up a career-high 10 assists to earn his first double-double since 2015. On Saturday, Echols dropped in four straight 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead the Wildcats to a 77-67 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.

The senior point guard is currently second in the GLIAC in points per game with 19.3 and is fourth with 4.6 assists per game. Echols lead the conference in free throw percentage with 92.5.
