Wildcat women’s basketball signs three new faces

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University women’s basketball has signed three new faces to a National Letter of Intent during the NCAA Early Signing period, according to a release from the school.

Samantha Potter of Royal Oak High School in Michigan, Esther Byington of Grand Haven High School in Michigan and Makaylee Kuhn from Hilbert High School in Wisconsin.

“This is a start to a very good recruiting class,” Head Coach Troy Mattson said in the release. “It may be one of the most athletic classes that we have recruited and should fit very well into the style of play we are looking to achieve.”

Potter is a 6-1 guard/forward who averaged 13.5 points per game her junior season. Potter was named to the OAA White All-League Team and team Most Valuable Player after setting a school for assists in a season, 85, and career, 202. Potter helped guide the team to a school record 19-wins and helped the team clinch a share of the OAA title by posting 23 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three steals against rival West Bloomfield High School.

A 6-3 forward, Byington averaged 8.4 points on 68% shooting and also grabbed 5.0 rebounds per game despite an injury-shortened season during her junior year. In her sophomore season, Byington averaged 7.9 points, 2.5 blocks and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Kuhn averaged 17.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.6 steals during her junior season for Hilbert. The 5-11 point guard was a finalist for the Wisconsin Sports Awards Female Athlete of the Year for the 2017-18 school year and has been an unanimous First Team All-Conference selection, the team’s Player of the Year and team captain for the past two seasons.

The three signees will join a team that was at the top of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll but will lose five seniors at the end of the year.
