Wildcats’ gridder Mayon win another award

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Junior running back Jake Mayon of the Northern Michigan University football team was named to the All-Midwest Region Football Second Team last week by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Mayon is the first Wildcats football player to receive recognition from the D2CCA.

He led the GLIAC with 1,377 rushing yards, averaging 137.7 yards per game on 211 carries. Scoring eight touchdowns, Mayon posted more than 200 yards rushing four times and had six games with at least 100 yards.

A threat in the passing game as well, Mayon totaled 203 yards on 23 receptions. Against Michigan Tech, Mayon completed the only passing attempt of his career for a 30-yard TD.

The D2CCA recognition adds to awards this fall that include a GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor and in the postseason being named the GLIAC Offensive Back of the Year.
