Wildcats soccer teams win, tie

ASHLAND, Ohio — The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team played to a 3-3 double-overtime tie at Ashland University Friday afternoon in a game filled with offense that saw the lead change hands several times.

The Wildcats’ women scored a 2-1 victory at home against Ferris State on Friday.

NMU men 3, Ashland 3

NMU keeper Filippo Torelli and Eagles goalie Dimitrius Karousos kept busy as the game included 32 shots with 19 of them on goal. Northern’s record moved to 4-9-2 overall and Ashland’s to 7-7-1 as both teams are now 2-7-1 in the GLIAC.

Ashland took its only lead in the 25th minute when Thomas Ardron got the ball past the outstretched Torelli.

NMU answered less three minutes later when sophomore midfielder Callum Olpin scored his first of the season as freshman forward Birkir Baldursson assisted.

Scoring picked up again in the middle of the second half, when four goals were scored in less than 13 minutes.

The Wildcats took their first lead on a goal off the head of junior defender Kevin Hoof in the 62nd minute following a throw-in. Freshman Isaac Wigermo and sophomore Nick Metcalfe got assists.

Three minutes later, Ashland tied it 2-2, but Northern only needed 47 seconds to regain the lead with junior forward Sam Popp’s team-leading fourth goal this season off an another assist from Metcalfe.

NMU kept the lead for about nine minutes until John Duldner notched the game’s final goal in the 75th minute.

Northern couldn’t get another goal, despite outshooting Ashland 5-3 in the OTs.

Torelli finished with seven saves to bring his season total to 44, fourth in the GLIAC.

The Wildcats continue this Ohio road trip at Tiffin at noon Sunday.

NMU women 2, Ferris S. 1

At the NMU Soccer Field, NMU scored twice in the first half and held off the Bulldogs to move to 3-9-3 and 2-4-2. FSU is 9-7 and 5-3.

The Wildcats got on the board in the 17th minute when junior defender Sophia Sachs headed in a corner kick by junior Maddie Herbert for Sachs’ first goal. Then about 18 minutes later, senior Allyssa Milam made it 2-0 on a free kick from outside the box that went between the Bulldog goalkeeper’s legs.

Ferris picked up its offense in the second half, but NMU freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto held the Bulldogs at bay until the 81st minute, when Bri Rogers connected on a penalty kick.

Frontuto had five saves to bring her season total to 70, fourth in the GLIAC.

On Sunday, the Wildcats host No. 3 Grand Valley State in their home finale and Senior Day at 1 p.m.
