NMU names Payne, Diamantoni co-captains

Defenseman Klimek named Wildcats assistant captain

MARQUETTE — Senior forwards Robbie Payne and Zach Diamantoni have been named co-captains of the 2017-18 Northern Michigan University hockey team. Senior defenseman Jordan Klimek will serve as alternate captain.

“One of the highest honors an athlete can receive is the confidence from their peers to lead a team,” Wildcats head coach Grant Potulny said. “I could not be more excited to have Zach, Robbie and Jordan leading this year’s team.”

In 39 games last season, Payne scored 13 goals and had 16 assists for 29 points to be the team’s top returnee in goals and points. He has career totals of 30 goals, 30 assists and 60 points

Diamantoni had six goals, 14 assists and 20 points, all three ranking sixth for the Wildcats, while he’s accumulated 11 goals and 29 assists for 40 points in his three-year career at NMU.

Klimek appeared in all 39 games for NMU last season, earning 11 assists and 11 points. In his career, he has one goal and 24 assists for 25 points.

All three are two-time WCHA All-Academic Team members, while Payne and Diamantoni are two-time and Klimek has one appearance as a WCHA Scholar Athlete.

“These men exemplify everything we are looking for in someone to lead your program,” Potulny said.

“They are outstanding students, active in our community and bring a high level of work ethic to the ice sheet.”
