17 Greco-Roman wrestlers added to NMU-OTS roster

MARQUETTE — The U.S. Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University recently announced that 17 new athletes have joined the men’s Greco-Roman wrestling team for this school year.

A total of 54 athletes are now training in this Olympic sport, according to a news release from the NMU-OTS. This is the largest recruiting class in coach Rob Hermann’s tenure and includes wrestlers from 10 states and Japan.

He gives much credit to the expansion to the addition of former Olympian Andy Bisek as an assistant coach on his staff. Bisek did some of his training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center, the forerunner to the NMU-OTS.

“I feel that coach Andy Bisek has really added to our recruiting efforts,” Hermann said. “Having a big mix of new athletes and veterans is going to help everyone get better.

“It is nice to see wrestlers choosing the Greco-Roman style as their future.”

One wrestler making that choice is Calvin Germinaro of Anoka, Minnesota.

“I always liked the Greco-Roman style and planned on training in Greco on the side while wrestling for the University of Minnesota,” he said. “Once I spoke with the NMU coaches and learned that I could specialize in Greco and earn a degree, I knew I wanted to come to Northern Michigan University.

“NMU has always been the place to go to wrestle Greco while pursuing an education,” Bisek said. “Our goal is that four years from now all of these guys leave as champions on the mat and with a diploma.”

In addition to Germinaro, this year’s additions include Colby Baker of Panama City, Florida; Riley Briggs of Brentwood, California; Reese Dalton of Lilburn, Georgia; Keaton Fanning of Bedford, Texas; Mason Hartshorn of Antioch, California; Britton Holmes of Peyton, Colorado; Masahiro Inoue of Tokyo; Greg Kleinsmith of Binghamton, New York; Marc Leon of San Jose, California; Justin Lien of Castle Rock, Colorado; Jon Massey of Wilson, North Carolina; Carter Nielsen of Foley, Minnesota; Benji Peak of Elkhorn, Wisconsin; Patrick Ramirez of Napa, California; Byron Schlickenmeyer of Auburn Hills, Michigan; and Eric Spence of Elk Grove, California.
