Wildcats tie Lake State, win shootout and Cappo Cup

SAULT STE. MARIE — In a repeat performance of last night’s contest, the Northern Michigan University hockey team tied Lake Superior State 1-1 again Saturday night.

However, unlike Friday’s game, it was the Wildcats who earned the extra point in the WCHA standings.

That was thanks to NMU forward Dominik Shine’s goal in the sudden death shootout

NMU captain Shane Sooth got the Wildcats (5-17-4, 3-12-3 WCHA) on the board just 39 seconds into the opening period with the assists going to defensemen Rylan Yaremko and Jordan Klimek.

Lake State (9-12-3, 6-9-3) bounced back to tie the game late in the second period.

With the Lakers on the power play, Max Humitz punished the Wildcats by notching his 11th goal of the season.

Northern hosts Alaska-Anchorage next weekend.

Both Friday and Saturday’s games are at 7:07 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
