Simmons preserves NMU’s 0-0 tie
MARQUETTE – Alexandra Simmons made a career-best 13 saves to give the Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team a scoreless tie with Ashland on Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.
In their final home game of the season, Simmons kept the No. 2 team in the GLIAC South off the scoreboard.
Ashland (9-2-4 overall, 6-2-2 GLIAC) held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal during the first half. Northern’s first shot came in the 40th minute when Madison Hamilla fired a shot that AU goalie Courtney Barker smothered.
Alyssa Milam and Paula Hafner of NMU (4-9-3, 3-4-3) were denied on shots by Barker in the second half.
Simmons made three overtime saves to preserve the scoreless deadlock and earn her eighth career shutout. In the final minute of the second OT, Milam nearly won it with a header but again was denied.
NMU is 3-1-1 in its last five games and closes out the season with a game at 5 p.m. Friday at Michigan Tech.
