NMU wins GLIAC volleyball opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team picked up a win in their GLIAC opener Friday.

The Wildcats (6-4) defeated Saginaw Valley State in five sets (27-25, 21-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-8). Northern was led by Madison Whitehead, who had 20 kills, while three other players reached double digits. Jami Hogeboom had 53 assists, while Megan Dahl had 25 digs.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair where Northern prevailed. After SVSU took the second frame, the Wildcats bounced back by winning the third set on a kill by Whitehead.

The Cardinals held on to win the fourth set, but NMU raced out to an 11-3 lead and earned the five-set victory on three straight kills by Marta Fraga Guntin.

Northern takes on Lake Superior State today in Sault Ste. Marie.
