Northern kickers fall to Panthers
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northern Michigan University’s season ended on a sour note Tuesday with a 3-1 GLIAC Tournament women’s volleyball loss to host Ohio Dominican.
NMU held the Panthers scoreless in the second half, but still wound up with a final 7-10 overall mark and 5-7-0 GLIAC record.
“It was a good year,” NMU head coach Matt Granstrand said. “As a coach and as a player, you never want to see the season come to an end.
“That being said, I thought we had a fantastic season.
“I’m proud to be associated with such a classy group of young ladies.”
ODU scored first when Ashley Blake converted a shot to the left corner of the goal served up by Jordan Mazzi in the sixth minute (5:17).
The Wildcats evened the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute (17:01) when senior midfielder Ashley Katers scored an unassisted goal.
The ball ricocheted off the back post into the net.
Blake then broke the tie when she took a through ball from Allison Pavlik and converted from the front of the box in the 37th minute (36:24).
ODU capped the scoring with just 46 seconds left in the half when Emily Rivello took a cross from Blake and scored on a shot into the upper right corner of the net. Pavlik also recorded an assist on the play.
The Panthers outshot NMU 16-8 in the contest, with an 11-3 advantage in the opening half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Glantz made four saves in net for the Wildcats while playing 69:41.
NMU sophomore Alexandra Simmons came up with one stop in 27:19 of play.
