Hafner scores twice in NMU soccer win

CANTON, Ohio – Sophomore Paula Hafner scored the game-winning goal less than six minutes in as Northern Michigan University completed a women’s soccer weekend sweep in Ohio with a 4-0 victory over Malone on Sunday afternoon.

“It was a great weekend for us,” NMU head coach Matt Granstrand said. “We are a young team but we are also mature and love to compete.”

Hafner scored the first of her two goals when senior defender Kim Rietveld fed her the ball and she fired it high into the middle of the net with just 5:43 elapsed.

NMU (4-6-1 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) made it 2-0 when freshman Abby Cook notched her second goal of the season by taking a feed from junior midfielder Helen Kiilunen in the 12th minute.

The Wildcats didn’t score again in the first half, but struck quickly after the intermission was over when Hafner took a pass from Rietveld and shook off a defender for her eighth goal this season about five minutes into the second half.

Hafner then assisted on Northern’s final goal, sending a crossing pass to sophomore midfielder Wynona Maravilla about 14 minutes later.

NMU sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Glantz recorded the win by making seven saves in 66:30. The Wildcats dominated possession, outshooting the Pioneers 26-15 with seven shots coming from Hafner and four from Maravilla.

NMU returns home this week for pair of GLIAC contests, hosting Tiffin at 4 p.m. Friday and Findlay at noon Sunday.
