NMU swimmers Helm, Bundzis honored

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — For the second straight week, Northern Michigan University athletes swept GLIAC honors in swimming and diving.

And both Wildcats men’s and women’s teams are ranked 13th in NCAA Division II by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association.

Junior Rachel Helm captured her second straight conference Women’s Athlete of the Week honor, highlighting a pair of home meets over the weekend by breaking her own PEIF Pool record in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.76 seconds on Saturday against St. Cloud State and Northern State. She also swam with the winning 400 medley relay team.

In Friday’s first meet, she won the 75-yard back and swam a leg of the victorious 125 medley relay.

For the men, senior Renars Bundzis was named Men’s Athlete of the Week a week after junior teammate Jonas Reinhold captured the same honor.

Bundzis won the 200 back, was second in the 100 back and third in the 25 back, also swimming with two winning relays, the 125 medley and 400 medley.

NMU swept to victory in both men’s and women’s meets, the men only going up against St. Cloud.

In the national rankings, the Northern women are the highest ranked GLIAC school with 93 points, three spots ahead of fellow conference school Grand Valley State, which is the defending league champion. NMU has won every meet against a Division II school so far this season, having only lost at Division I Bowling Green State.

The NMU men received 74 points and are the No. 2 GLIAC team, with GVSU at No. 9. The Lakers also won the men’s league title a year ago. The men’s team is undefeated so far.

The Wildcats are off until Nov. 3, when they host Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.
