LaPointe-Dunham leads Cognition Brewery’s deep, talented attack

ISHPEMING — Champions were crowned in the three divisions of the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Aug. 15.

In Class A, Cognition Brewing Co. wrapped up the only perfect record at 13-0 when it held off divisional runner-up Buck’s Party Store 17-10.

Mariah LaPointe-Dunham led the way, going 4 for 4 with a homer and double. Teammate Nicole Gustafson was also 4 for 4, while Terri Tammelin was 4 for 5.

Collecting three hits each were the winners’ Mandie Meyer, who had two doubles; Nicolette Schultz, with a triple and double; and Maria Slater and Amanda Harlock, who each had a double.

For Buck’s, Kathy Hill and Nicole Christensen each had three hits, while Sara Polini, Janet Koski, Debbie Zummak and Dindy Cousineau had two hits apiece, while Abbie Watters doubled.

Also in Class A, Stacie Kruse and Candy Kaina-inan each were 4 for 4 to lead Screened Image to a 12-2 win over Sisters, which saw Sandie Baysore and Brittany Etelamaki each collect two hits.

Katie Rankinen was 4 for 4 with a double to lead Tino’s to an 11-10 extra-inning squeaker over Venice 1.

Teammate Kara Harrington, who had the winning RBI, and Amber Salo, who doubled, each went 3 for 4, while Shana Caliguri was 2 for 3 with a homer.

Venice’s Britney Rovelsky and Ashley Pietro each were 3 for 4.

LeAnn Saarela and Brittany Singer homered in Jasper Ridge’s 26-11 win over Martin Sports.

Martin’s Thalicia Dell-Angelo went 4 for 4 with a double, while Veronica Slone, who homered, Joanna Smail and Cortney Caliguri each were 3 for 4.

In Class B, Libbie Doney homered and was 4 for 4 to lead Dave’s Collision to an 11-2 record with a 17-4 victory over Venice 3.

The winners’ Lillee Martin was 4 for 4 and Mel Bess 3 for 4 with a homer, while Venice’s Emily Wright homered and Becky Lee tripled.

Also in Class B, Jenna Lee was 4 for 4 and Brandi Maxon tripled as Buster’s got a 21-8 win over Quality Car Care, whose Erin LaValley was 3 for 3 and Rhonda Williams 2 for 3.

Brogie’s beat Paradise 16-14.

Jess Taisto went 4 for 4 with the walkoff two-run homer in the seventh to lead Pasquali’s to a 12-11 win over Signs Unlimited.

Pasquali’s Frannie Kelly tripled and Nicki Frisk doubled, while Signs’ Jess Peurakoski tripled and Shelly Malay was 3 for 3.

Casey Dugan went 3 for 4 with two triples and Neily Collick tripled to lead Yooper Shirts to a 13-10 win over VALIC.

Jaime Gobert homered, tripled and doubled to lead Dave’s Collision to a 11-9 tight win over Brogie’s.

Dave’s Mel Bess and Lillee Martin each homered, as did Brogie’s Kim Koski and Brylea Ranta. Koski went 4 for 4 while Ranta added a triple.

In Class C, Stacie Vahamaa homered and was 6 for 6 to lead U.P. Health Plan to first place at 12-1 with a 17-12 win over River Rock Lanes.

The winners’ Chelsea Hewitt and Steph Stocking doubled, while Rock’s Libby Lee was 3 for 3, Jordan Fitzpatrick tripled and Steph Perry doubled.

Also in Class C, Toni Tikkanen, Mary Peterson and Nikki Long all went 4 for 4 as Pineshears beat Willey’s Tire Shop 21-18.

Tikkanen had a grand slam and double in her output, while Peterson had a double as teammate Livvie Wood homered. Willey’s Krystal Heikkinen homered as Brooke Bleckler, who tripled, and Caitlin Hewitt went 3 for 4.

The Eagles posted a 7-3 win over U.P. Fabricating.

The winners’ Amber Nault was 3 for 4 and Chastity Ellet 2 for 3 with a homer. UPF’s Alyse Schaeffer, Michelle Ayotte and Lynn Laakso all went 3 for 4.

Katie Menard hit a grand slam homer and a double to lead Marquette Embroidery to a 24-23 win over Bertucci Construction, which got a homer from Rhonda Bertucci.

Liz Farley tripled twice and Jessy Boudreau doubled in a 17-7 win by Jack’s Teepee 1 over Venice 2, whose Jenny Anderson and Jess Taylor each were 3 for 3.

Madison Pruett homered and Kathy Gischia tripled to lead QCPFC to a 23-5 win over Jack’s Teepee 2, whose Holly Luokkala and Bethany Firby both tripled.
