Mike Devine, K.C. Bjorne top qualifiers for Marquette Golf Club Men’s Club Championship

MARQUETTE — Two days of qualifying over the weekend determined the field of 15 golfers who will challenge defending champion Nathan Aho for the Men’s Club Championship at the Marquette Golf Club.

Top qualifiers on the Greywalls course were Mike Devine and K.C. Bjorne, who each totaled 152 for their 36 holes, Devine shooting 75 Saturday and 77 Sunday and Bjorne 74 and 78.

The field of 33 golfers was tightly bunched at the top as the 15th and final qualifying spot was just five strokes higher at 157.

Brett Specker shot Saturday’s best round with a 1-over-par 72, but finished near the middle of the 15 qualifiers with 83 Sunday for 155. Kurt Ghiardi did just about the opposite, shooting Sunday’s best round of 74 after an 81 Saturday also for 155.

The other qualifiers, with their Saturday, Sunday and total scores, are Jeff Blewett 76-77–153, Dan McCutcheon 74-79–153, Jim Higgins 76-79–155, Robert Luke 75-80–155, Chad Wester 79-77–156, Ben Johnson 78-78–156, Aaron Swanson 77-79–156, Ben Specker 75-81–156, Scott Frazier 73-83–156, Dan Nygard 157 (individual rounds unavailable) and Dennis Hruska 75-82–157.

The club championship tournament will use a match-play format starting Saturday with Aho seeded No. 1 as defending champ.

In the first round of the upper bracket, the matches will be Aho vs. Hruska, Luke vs. Brett Specker, Blewett vs. Ben Specker and McCutcheon vs. Swanson. The lower bracket will feature Devine vs. Nygard, Higgins vs. Wester, Bjorne vs. Frazier and Ghiardi vs. Johnson.
