Marquette, Ishpeming 2 to play for finals spot in Majors Little League baseball tournament

IRONWOOD — Marquette was sent into the elimination bracket on Tuesday while Ishpeming 2 kept its hopes alive at the Little League District 11 Majors baseball tournament being held in Ironwood.

Portage Lake felled Marquette 12-2 in the finals of the winner’s bracket to earn a spot into the championship round.

Marquette was sent to today’s last game of the elimination bracket, where it will face Ishpeming 2, which defeated host Penokee Range 7-1 on Tuesday to stay alive.

Today’s 6 p.m. EDT game between Marquette and Ishpeming 2 will determine the other championship round finalist, though that Marquette County team will have to defeat PL twice to win the district title, since the Houghton-Hancock team has yet to lose.

The first game of the championship round is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT Thursday, with the “if necessary” game if Marquette or Ishpeming 2 wins the first game set for 6 p.m. EDT Friday.

The district champion advances to the state tournament to be held in the Port Huron-area community of St. Clair starting July 19.
