IRON MOUNTAIN — Karen Plaisier of Ishpeming and Becky Cecconi of Iron Mountain teamed up to win a fourth Upper Peninsula Dual women’s golf championship Tuesday at Pine Grove Country Club.

Regarded as the premier women’s best ball-scramble tournament on the U.P. Ladies Golf Association calendar, Cecconi and Plaisier held a one-shot lead after Monday’s opening round despite going without a birdie. They shot a four-over par 76 for Monday’s low best ball round.

They came back with three birdies Tuesday during the scramble portion for a par 72 and 148 total.

“We struggled,” said Plaisier, a 2018 U.P. Hall of Fame inductee who has also won the U.P. Dual with other partners.

Noted Cecconi, also in the U.P. Hall of Fame, “We battled but left the door open.”

Mary Hart and Katie Kosma of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, made the strongest challenge, finishing two shots back at 150 after rounds of 78-72. The Canadians shot a 35 over the front nine Tuesday and briefly shared the lead.

On the back nine, Cecconi and Plaisier posted 35 while Hart and Kosma slipped to 37.

JoAnn Poncino of Niagara, Wisconsin, and defending U.P. senior champion Barb Scott of Escanaba placed third with 152 (77-75). Six-time champions Lori Shea of Gladstone and Polly Anderson of Green Bay, Wisconsin, rallied to finish fourth, opening with 82 and closing with 72 for 154.
