YMCA Killer Whales swimmers earn state championships

These are the swimmers from the YMCA of Marquette County's Killer Whales who participated at the YMCA Wisconsin-Upper Peninsula State Championships in Brown Deer, Wis., last weekend. MARQUETTE — The Killer Whales of the Marquette County YMCA brought 25 swimmers to the YMCA Wisconsin-Upper Peninsula State Championships in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, last weekend and finished 12th out of 23 teams.

To qualify, these swimmers ages 8 to 17 had to meet specific times prior to the meet, and four of them ended up as state champions.

Carson VanderSchaaf led the way with three title in the boys 11-12 age group as he won the 100-yard breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 100 individual medley.

Katylin Roell, a girls 8-under swimmer, took the 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly, while Colin VanderSchaaf, in boys 11-12, won the 50 breast and 500 free. Erin VanderSchaaf, a girls 13-14 competitor, won the 400 IM.
