Soo Indians Midget AAA hockey team goes 1-2 downstate

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Indians Midget AAA hockey team, the only one of its kind in the Upper Peninsula, won once in three games played in the Detroit area the weekend of Feb. 2-4.

In its middle game on Saturday night in Rochester Hills, the Indians defeated Honeybaked Ham 4-2. Colton Hayes opened the scoring for the Soo before Honeybaked tied it. Then Justin Moyle on a shot from the blue line and Chase Tallaire gave the Yoopers a 3-1 lead. Jeff Rahilly rounded out the Indians’ scoring with a power play goal in the third period. Soo assists went to Moyle, Garth Wickham, Bren Lyons and Steven Cope as Alex Rairigh earned the goaltending win.

The Indians lost their opener on Friday night to Belle Tire at the Taylor Sportplex 5-3 despite goals by the Soo’s Cam Parrot, Cope and Spencer Samppala.

The Soo’s last game was a 3-1 loss to the Oakland Grizzlies in Fraser on Sunday morning with Moyle scoring.
