Negaunee grad Dre Tuominen leads Bay men’s basketball team over Finlandia
HOUGHTON — Dre Tuominen led all players in scoring as the Bay College men’s basketball team defeated Finlandia 97-77 on Saturday.
Delayed three hours after the game had to be moved to Michigan Tech, the Negaunee High School graduate scored 27 points against a team coached by another Negaunee grad and ex-Miners coach, Mike O’Donnell.
Kobi Barnes, a 6-foot-10 center for Bay, added 20 points and seven rebounds.
“Dre Tuominen made some big baskets when it counted,” Bay coach Matt Johnson said. “But I thought Kobi Barnes was the difference-maker. We went to him early and that kind of set the pace. Going to the post really opened up things for our perimeter kids.”
In addition, Marquette Senior High School product Garrett Finkbeiner scored eight points and Manistique graduate Darien Nichols had two for the Norse.
Bay couldn’t shake the Lions until late as the lead was just 76-72 with a little more than five minutes left.
Then Tuominen, who tallied 22 points in the second half, helped close out the game.
O’Donnell said his team must tighten down on defense.
“We kept making runs. But then we would allow them to score a few,” he said. “We need to defend better. Every night, we’re giving up 80-, 90-plus points, and that won’t get it done.”
