Soo Indians split at home
SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie Indians Midget AAA youth hockey team split a pair of games against Detroit Honeybaked at home last weekend in the Upper Peninsula team’s first action since the holiday break.
On Saturday afternoon at Lake Superior State’s Taffy Abel Arena, the Detroit team posted a 3-1 victory despite the Indians scoring first on a goal by Brandon Woodward and set up by Hudson Troyer in the opening period.
Honeybaked came back with two second-period goals before icing the game with an empty-net goal late.
Dmitri Kochan made 21 saves in the Soo net.
On Sunday morning, the Indians bounced back with a 3-2 shootout victory. This time, Honeybaked scored first in the opening period, though its lead lasted just three minutes before the Soo’s Bren Lyons tipped in a shot by Spencer Samppala of Marquette.
Lyons got an assist with four minutes to go in the period on a Chase Tallaire goal, but this time the Detroit-area team needed just a minute to retie it 2-2 entering the first intermission.
The scoring dried up for the next two regulation periods and the 4-on-4 overtime as Kochan stood tall, stopping 42 Honeybaked shots and three more in the shootout.
In the shootout, Garth Wickham went first for the Soo and deposited the only goal by either team that proved to be the game-winner.
