DOLLAR BAY — Republic-Michigamme came tantalizingly close to victory on Friday at Dollar Bay, losing its girls basketball game 44-37.

The Hawks (0-9) trailed 11-9 after one quarter before taking a 22-17 lead at halftime. DB bounced back to go up 30-26 after three quarters before holding off R-M down the stretch in the closest loss of the season for Republic.

“Our offense did a lot better in the first half,” Hawks coach April Radcliffe said. “We did a good job of moving the ball and shooting the ball.”

R-M was hurt by its free-throw shooting, making just 6 of 21 (29 percent).

Freshman Allie Radcliffe led the Hawks with 11 points, while sophomore teammate Tailyn Raisanen added nine.

Emma Stout paced DB with 15 points.

The Bluebolts also won the JV game 42-9.
