Wildcats split pair of GLIAC volleyball matches

ALLENDALE — Northern Michigan University split a pair of four-set GLIAC road matches on the volleyball court over the weekend, defeating Wayne State on Friday night before falling at Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon.

In Detroit on Friday, the Wildcats bounced back after losing the first set to prevail, 20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 29-27.

NMU jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the fourth set, but the Warriors came back to take a 16-13 lead. Northern again took the lead, this time 21-18, before the teams exchanged leads and a number of ties starting at 22-22.

At 27-27, Wildcats senior Kayla Chosa smashed back-to-back kills on sets from senior Jami Hogeboom to finish off the set and the match.

Chosa finished with a team-high 14 kills, while junior Autumn Monsma added 12 kills and four aces and freshman Leticia Antunes chipped in with 11 kills. Hogeboom ended the night with 49 assists.

The Wildcat defense was paced by Rachel Braunschweig, who had 21 digs. Hogeboom, Monsma and Antunes all had at least 10 digs as well.

Chosa also factored in on defense, posting nine blocks, including three solo. Sophomore Sarah Kuehn added four blocks, two solo.

Senior Madison Whitehead notched seven kills and moved to eighth place all-time in NMU history in that category with 1,140.

Chosa is also nearing a career milestone. Her 94 solo blocks puts her third all-time in NMU history.

Grand Valley 3, NMU 1

At Allendale on Saturday, the host Lakers ground out a 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23 victory.

NMU (11-4 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) was led offensively by Kuehn with 12 kills, while Whitehead and Monsma had 11 apiece and Chosa added nine.

Monsma also had two aces to add to her GLIAC-leading total, while Hogeboom had 49 assists and six block assists, Braunschweig 19 digs and Chosa one solo and nine assisted blocks.

Northern returns to Marquette this week for its first home matches at Vandament Arena since mid-September. The Wildcats host Tiffin at 7 p.m. Friday and Ashland at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
