Wildcat women’s golf finishes second

ALLENDALE — Senior Haley Hewer led the Northern Michigan University women’s golf team to a runner-up finish at the Gilda’s Club Laker Fall Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State that ended Sunday.

The Wildcats had 618 strokes over the event’s two days to the host Lakers’ 591. Ashland was third with 631, while Lake Superior State was sixth with 655.

Like her team, Hewer was runner-up individually, shooting rounds of 70 and 77 for a 3-over-par 147. Hewer led after Saturday’s first round, but GVSU’s Katie Chipman came back after 71 Saturday to shoot 69 on Sunday for a winning 140 total.

Hewer’s teammate, junior Karissa Guthrie, tied for 12th with 79-78–157, while NMU sophomore Caro Els tied for 16th with 80-78–158, senior Avery Rochester of Marquette was 18th with 77-82–159 and junior Alice Krumm tied for 25th with 86-79–165. In addition, NMU junior Lillian Torres tied for 45th with 176.

Next up for the Wildcats is the Kohler Collegiate Classic Oct. 23-24 at Whistling Straits, a course used in multiple professional major tournaments, near Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
