16U, 18U hockey tryouts to begin
MARQUETTE — Marquette Junior Hockey will be offering two split season programs this fall with one being 16 years old and under and the other 18U.
The split season runs from this month through October with a state tournament at the end. The teams then break up for the high school hockey season. After the MHSAA hockey finals, the top two teams in October will then play in the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Tier II playoffs to compete for the chance to play in the USA Hockey national championship.
Both teams will hold tryouts over the next few days. The 18U AA team, to be coached by Darrel Sleeman and Joe Gaffney, will have their tryouts in two sessions on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. and then 6 to 8 p.m. at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center. There will be another tryout from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday.
The 16U A team, coached by Bob Luke, will hold tryouts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, and noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20.
Cost is $35 for any player who played with Marquette Junior Hockey last year and $60 for other players. Registration in advance is required and can be done at the website www.mqthockey.org.
