Marquette County Mavericks rally, then hold off 906 Sports Bar & Grill in Superiorland Baseball League game

GWINN — The Marquette County Mavericks put together a four-run rally in the fourth inning to take the lead for good, then hung on for an 8-7 victory over 906 Sports Bar & Grill in a Superiorland Baseball League game played in Gwinn on Monday.

In other action in this summer’s new adult baseball league, the Channing Railroaders shut down Congress Pizza 11-0 in Channing, while Craig Heinonen-Coldwell Banker outscored the Negaunee Blasters 17-12 in Negaunee.

Marquette County Mavericks 8, 906 Sports Bar & Grill 7

The Mavericks’ Brad Jalonen and 906’s Riley Lynch were top hitters, each going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and scoring a run. One of Lynch’s hits was a double.

Steve Hintsala started and pitched two innings for the Mavs, with Tony Zampese going the next two innings and earning the win while Preston Hutchens finished the final three for the save. Ryan Hanson started and Lynch came on in relief for 906.

A half-dozen other batters each collected two hits. For the Mavs, Hintsala also had two RBIs and scored two runs; Spencer Larson an RBI, two runs and a walk; James Larsen II two runs and a walk; and C.J. Lepisto an RBI.

Getting two hits for 906 were Hanson, who also had an RBI, and Kyle Dobson, who scored a run.

Lynch put 906 ahead right away with a two-run homer in the top of the first before Hanson singled home Zac Sorelle in the top of the second to make it 3-0.

After trading runs in each of the teams’ next at-bats, the Mavericks pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the third when Larsen and Hintsala scored.

The Mavs then went ahead for good in the fourth when their first four batters scored. Zampese walked, followed by singles by Larsen and Larson, then a double by Hintsala and single by Jalonen to chase the runners home.

906 pulled within 7-6 in the top of the sixth before the Mavs added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a single by Larson, errant throw on a bunt by Hintsala and an RBI groundout by Jalonen.

906 nearly pulled even in the seventh when Sorelle scored on a Dobson single, but the latter was stranded as the tying run when Hutchens got a strikeout to end the game.

Craig Heinonen-Coldwell Banker 17, Negaunee Blasters 12

Paul Storm earned the pitching win for Craig Heinonen-Coldwell Banker, allowing just one run in four innings.

For the winners, Steve Daavettila and Dan L’Esperance each went 4 for 5 with a double, while Paul Storm was 3 for 4 and Kirby Frantti 2 for 4 with a homer.
