Negaunee boys, Manistique girls win M-PC golf titles

MANISTIQUE — Manistique won its third straight Mid-Peninsula Conference girls golf title on Thursday, shooting 454 at their home Indian Lake Golf Club.

Westwood was runner-up two dozen strokes back with 478, followed by Iron Mountain with 499. Ishpeming was fourth with 514, Norway 569 and Negaunee 629.

Westwood’s Lauren Farley was medalist by seven strokes with 98. Manistique’s Abbi Popour was runner-up at 105, with Ishpeming’s Desiree Neveau third at 109.

IM’s Lexi Verrette was fourth with 113, while Manstique teammates Brooke Whiskin and Sydnee MacPhail tied for fifth with 115, though MacPhail got fifth.

The top five were named first team all-conference, while the next five were second team. The second teamers included Whiskin, teammates Megan Boyd and Megan Annelin and Westwood’s Olivia Kierzek.

For the boys, Negaunee won by a full 50 strokes, shooting 330 to 380 for Westwood. Manistique was third with 402 and Iron Mountain fourth with 405. Ishpeming and Norway didn’t have full teams.

Negaunee’s Carter Mason fired 77 to win medalist honors over teammate Trevor Uren, who had 79. Westwood’s Trent Sweeney was third with 84, then the Miners’ Jordon Mason with 85 and Iron Mountain’s Marcus Johnson 88 for the all-conference first team.

The second team, taking sixth through 10th places, included Negaunee’s Preston Maki and Keegan Erva, Manistique’s Curtis Byrns and Westwood’s Cam Mason.
