Michigan Tech hosts Saturday night for WCHA tournament title
HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech will take advantage of a change in the WCHA playoff structure this season by hosting the WCHA Tournament championship game at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
The Huskies (22-14-7) earned the right to host as the No. 2 team in the league and facing No. 4 Bowling Green State.
No. 1-seeded Bemidji State had the inside track to be finals host but lost to Bowling Green in two straight games of a best-of-3 series last weekend. The Falcons have now won seven straight games, including four in the league tourney.
MTU, meanwhile, needed a deciding-game 4-1 win over Minnesota State-Mankato (22-13-4) on Sunday to advance for a shot at winning the Broadmoor Trophy and automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament. The series began with a 5-1 Huskies’ win before the Falcons bounced back for a 1-0 victory.
Freshman forward Gavin Gould notched a hat trick in Sunday’s deciding game at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
In December, MTU swept Bowling Green in Ohio, 3-1 and 2-1.
