Marquette boys power past Soo
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys basketball team parlayed a 24-point second quarter into a 68-61 victory over Sault Ste. Marie at the Redmen gym on Saturday afternoon.
Six Redmen players made a bucket in the second quarter to turn an 18-16 lead after one quarter into a more comfortable 42-29 bulge at halftime.
“We were able to maintain that lead (the rest of) the game,” MSHS head coach Brad Nelson said. “At one point we had it up to 12 or 14 points, but Sault Ste. Marie has a lot of good shooters.
“In the end, we made enough plays to pull out this win.”
Marquette (16-1) was led by freshman Joe Ostrowsky with 14 points, while senior Garrett Finkbeiner added 12, junior Treylon McFerrin 11 and sophomore Ethan Martysz 10.
For the Blue Devils (16-3), Ryley Alaspa led all scorers with 17 points, while Paul Brandon added 15.

Johnson leads delayed PGA stop
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dustin Johnson left the Genesis Open in the twilight Saturday realizing he could be as little 24 hours away from reaching No. 1 in the world.
He wasn’t the least bit concerned, mainly because he still had 36 holes ahead of him. And all that really mattered to Johnson was winning at Riviera, the course he loves that has done nothing but tease him over the last five years.
Johnson had it really easy on a sloppy Saturday of light rain and a muddied course. He only had to play 18 holes of the second round, making three birdies over his last four holes for another 5-under 66 that gave him a one-shot lead at the halfway point of the rain-plagued tournament.
Webber finalist for Hall of Fame
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Chris Webber and Rollie Massimino are one step from the Hall of Fame.
The career 20-point-per-game NBA scorer and the coach who led Villanova to a stunning upset of Georgetown in the 1985 NCAA championship game were among the 14 finalists unveiled Saturday for this year’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction class.
Webber played 15 seasons with five franchises, plus was part of Michigan’s famed “Fab Five” group that headlined college basketball in the early 1990s.
Other first-time finalists include Connecticut women’s star Rebecca Lobo, two-time NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady, five-time All-Star Sidney Moncrief, Kansas coach Bill Self, and two-time NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich.
