Munising wrestlers eliminated

MOUNT PLEASANT — Munising proved to be as big an underdog as the seeding suggested at the MHSAA Division 4 team wrestling finals on Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs, seeded eighth in the eight-team D4 finals, lost 79-0 to No. 1 Hudson in the quarterfinals. That came despite Munising putting together a 22-3 record and Hudson coming in at only 16-9.

The Mustangs were the only Upper Peninsula school to reach the MHSAA finals in any division.

Munising wrestlers who lost by decision were Nick Miles at 135 pounds and Christian Cole at 152. Getting pinned were Ricky Loehr at 112 pounds, Devin Moore at 125, Zach McGowan at 130, Trevor Johnson at 145, Andrew Miles at 171, Colin Murdock at 189, Alex Johnson at 215 and Dylan Matson at 285.

The Mustangs had three vacant weight classes, too.

Hudson advances to this morning’s semifinals against No. 4 Bronson, and with a win there, a berth in the state title match at 3:30 p.m.

Skiers won’t risk undue injury

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Lindsey Vonn wasn’t about to risk another injury, and neither was Mikaela Shiffrin.

Vonn and Shiffrin, along with some of their American teammates on the World Cup tour, pulled out of the Alpine combined race on Friday because of dangerous conditions on the course. The first three racers all crashed, one taken away on a stretcher with a knee injury.

“For me I’ve had so many injuries, I don’t need to risk anything today,” Vonn said.

After Ilka Stuhec, Tessa Worley and Denise Feierabend all fell at nearly the same point in the opening super-G portion of the combined race, the event was postponed and the start was lowered.
