Northern Michigan University women’s club team, Marquette Mutineers hockey team line up doubleheader on Saturday

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University women’s club hockey team and the Marquette Mutineers adult, full-contact hockey team are both playing games at home in Marquette this weekend.

These two squads are teaming up to present a hockey doubleheader at Lakeview Arena late Saturday afternoon going well into the evening.

The NMU club team kicks off the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. against Minnesota-Duluth to open their final home series of the season.

The Mutineers of the Great Lakes Hockey League then play the West Bend, Wisconsin, Bombers at 8 p.m.

Admission prices for the doubleheader are $10 for the general public and $5 for NMU students with ID. Fans can also come for just the Mutineers game for $5, with children 12 and younger admitted free with a paying adult.

The NMU team has a second game to be played against Duluth at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Berry Events Center. Admission is free for that game.

Here is a rundown about each team:

NMU women’s club team

The Wildcats are 12-1-1 and ranked No. 1 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Division 2 West Division, scoring the most goals in the country with 118 and coming off a sweep of Central Michigan when they outscored the Chippewas 32-2.

Ranking just behind NMU at No. 3 in the ACHA Division 2 West Division, Minnesota-Duluth is the defending national champion, having knocked out NMU in last year’s semifinals 3-2 in double overtime on their way to the title.

Northern’s Allison Carlson is the top scorer in Division 2 with 56 goals and 25 assists for 81 points in just 14 games. Sydney Higgins is also in the top 10 nationally in scoring, while teammate Kelsey Weyland is one of top scoring defensemen in the country.

Marquette Mutineers

The first-year Mutineers will catch the Bombers after West Bend plays at the De Pere, Wisconsin, Deacons on Friday night. West Bend (8-2) is the three-time GLHL regular-season champions and are currently in second place with 16 points, two points ahead of third-place Marquette (7-6).

Dallas McLaughlin leads the the Mutineers in scoring with 25 goals and 15 assists for 40 points, tops in the GLHL. In addition, the top scoring team in the league with an average 6.15 goals per contest includes Ryan Sullivan, who has 16 goals and nine assists, and Joey Enright, with 10 goals and eight assists.

Last weekend, the Mutineers split a home-and-home series with Portage Lake, losing 7-3 in Houghton on Friday before rebounding for a 6-3 win Saturday at Lakeview.
