Redmen stumble in Sault baseball tournament

SAULT STE. MARIE – It was not a good day for the Marquette Senior High School baseball team Saturday at the Sault Ste. Marie Tournament.

The Redmen of manager Todd Koski dropped all three games they played, 9-2 to Shepard, 11-5 to Sault Ste. Marie and 12-2 in five innings to Alpena.

Marquette is now 16-11 on the season.

Brett Beauchamp took the mound loss for MSHS in the opener despite two hits by Sam Leow. Beauchamp allowed five runs on five hits and five walks over four innings of work. He struck out six.

Against Sault Ste. Marie, the Redmen fell behind 5-0 in the third inning and 8-0 in the fourth. MSHS committed six errors in the contest.

Alec Gadzinski went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Austin Wachnicki also went 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Redmen.

Joe Phillips was tagged with the loss. In 4.2 innings, he surrendered all 11 runs on nine hits while fanning two.

Marquette trailed just 3-2 after three innings to Alpena before the Wildcats broke the game open with a seven-run fourth.

Jack Kochevar absorbed the mound loss. In four innings, he gave up 10 runs on 13 hits while striking out three.

Luke McAuliffe and Lucas Klingler both went 1-for-1 at the plate for MSHS.
