Redettes cop title; Mustangs, Pats win

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE – Perfection was preserved for the Marquette Senior High School girls basketball team on Friday night.

Despite shooting just 22 percent from the field, the Redettes came back with a big fourth quarter to defeat Kingsford 56-41 and improve to 17-0 overall.

MSHS also has a 7-0 record in the Great Northern Conference, clinching that crown for the Redettes with one game left.

The teams were tied 11-11 after one quarter, with the Flivvers (11-5, 3-3) taking a 21-18 lead at halftime.

Marquette was able to take a 32-29 lead after three quarters before getting ahead 47-41, which forced Kingsford into a fouling situation.

“Kingsford played really scrappy; we knew we’d be in a real dogfight,” MSHS coach Ben Smith said. “We shot poorly and they contested our shots well.

“But we were able to make our free throws down the stretch and that was the difference.”

For the game, Marquette made just 11 of 50 from the field but was 30 of 40 at the free-throw line, a 75 percent success clip.

Senior Hunter Viitala illustrated the Marquette game – in her game-high 15 points, she was just 2 of 12 from the field but made 10 of 13 at the line. She also posted team highs of nine rebounds and four steals.

Senior Lizzie Kurin added 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

For Kingsford, Courtney Qualley scored 11 points .

The Redettes also won the JV game 53-44.

Westwood 43,

Manistique 30

At West Ishpeming Friday night, the Westwood High School girls’ basketball team outscored visiting Manistique 28-13 in the second half en route to a 43-30 Mid-Peninsula Conference win over the Emeralds.

“We came out in a full court press in the second half and that gave us an energy boost,” Patriots head coach Kurt Corcoran said.

“We got some quick buckets and (Hannah) Salmi hit three 3-point shots in the third quarter that propelled us to a 10-point lead.”

Salmi led WHS (3-12 overall, 3-6 M-PC) with 13 points. Katie Rankinen added 10 and Kathryn Etelamaki chipped in nine. Courtney Beauchamp contributed seven boards.

Allie Nagy tossed in 13 points for the Emeralds (1-16, 0-9).

Manistique led at the half, 17-15.

“We had trouble finding our rhythm in the first half against their (defensive) zone,” Corcoran said.

Westwood won the JV game, 53-21.

Corcoran was back on the bench after being suspended one game by WHS officials for improper conduct during a Westwood-Ishpeming boys game Monday night.

The suspension was never officially served, however, as Thursday night’s WHS game at Gladstone was postponed.

Munising 62,

North Dickinson 46

At Felch Friday night, Marissa Immel and Frankie Mattson poured in 20 points apiece to spark the Munising High School girls basketball team to a 62-46 Skyline Central win over North Dickinson.

Bailey Downs added 10 points, and she and Mattson pulled down 11 rebounds each, as the Class D No. 1-ranked Mustangs improved to 16-1 overall and 10-0 in league play.

“Twenty points from Marissa, 20 from Frankie and 10 from Bailey – I’ll take that from three sophomores,” coach Mattson said.

Miranda Jacobson tossed in 19 points to lead the Nordics (7-9, 5-4).

Munising led but 27-25 at the half before outscoring the Nordics 20-10 in the third quarter.

Munising won the JV game, 60-47.
