Marquette 6th, 8th at regional bowling

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE – The Iron Mountain-Kingsford boys were the lone Upper Peninsula team to qualify for the state Division 2 high school bowling finals through regional competition held downstate on Friday.

Marquette was among the 14 schools competing in boys and girls regionals at Monitor Lanes in Bay City. The top three boys and top three girls teams advance to the state finals next weekend.

The Redette girls finished sixth among 12 girls teams competing, putting together 3,061 total pins in a combination of six Baker and three regular team games. Baker games have teammates alternate frames to come up with a single-game score.

Three Bay City schools – Western, John Glenn and Central – took the qualifying spots with 3,232 the lowest to make it.

Marquette had Baker games ranging from 102 to 183 with five-person team games of 733, 794 and 704.

Three other U.P. teams also competed, with Escanaba finishing eighth with 3,010, Sault Ste. Marie 10th (2,820) and IM-Kingsford 11th (2,810).

For the boys, Marquette was eighth among 13 teams with 3,450, which was 246 pins behind IM-Kingsford’s third-place total. The top two qualifying spots were taken by Bay City Western and Bay City Central.

The Redmen had Baker games ranging from 117 to 198 and regular games of 889, 827 and 862.

IM-K did much of its damage during Baker, shooting three 200 games, including 234, and also had a 901 final regular game to nudge out fourth-place Escanaba, which finished 37 pins out.

The Soo was 13th with 2,380.

Scores were obtained from the MHSAA website, www.mhsaa.com, but information wasn’t available for the Division 3 regional at Cheboygan involving Ishpeming-Negaunee or the Division 4 regional at Gaylord with Westwood and L’Anse.

All these teams will compete today in regional singles competition for a chance to make that part of the state finals next weekend.
