NMU women’s hoops: Wildcats avenge home loss to Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team began its final weekend of regular-season travel with a 52-38 win over Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday.

The Wildcats(17-7 overall, 14-6 in the GLIAC), who suffered an uncharacteristic home loss to the Lakers (5-21, 5-15) in January, jumped to a 9-0 start and finished the first half with a 20-11 advantage.

“We started out the game with a great defensive effort and kept their points down,” head coach Troy Mattson said.

While the Wildcats held their lead throughout the contest, the Lakers narrowed it to four points with just over 10 minutes remaining before NMU scored 12 unanswered points to close out the victory.

NMU junior guard Alyssa Colla led all scorers with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior forward Abbey DeBruin had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Lakers’ Alexandra Morrow scored a team-high nine points, and Stephanie Fisher added eight.

The Wildcats, who now boast a five-game win streak, travel to Northwood to battle the Timberwolves at 1 p.m. on Saturday in their last road game of the regular season.
