NMU basketball: Wildcats men and women’s squads close 2013 at Findlay, Hillsdale

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s basketball teams wrap up the 2013 portion of their schedule over the next three days with a pair of GLIAC contests on the road.

The Wildcats are at Findlay today with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men following at 3 p.m.

NMU is at Hillsdale on Monday with the women tipping off at 6 p.m. and the men’s game scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Wildcats women (5-1 overall, 2-0 in GLIAC) opened conference play a week ago with a pair of wins at home over Walsh and Malone.

The Findlay women, at 4-0 overall, are also unbeaten in league play having won at Lake Superior State and Northwood a week ago. Junior forward Lacey Kessler leads the Oilers in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game.

Hillsdale, at 2-4 overall, split its first two GLIAC contests of the season when it lost to Northwood, but beat LSSU. Junior forward Megan Fogt is the Chargers leading scorer and rebounder, averaging a double-double of 19.6 points and 18.7 boards per game.

Two Wildcats are scoring an average of 10 or more points per game after six contests, led by junior guard Alyssa Colla scoring 13.5 points per outing. Junior forward Abbey DeBruin is averaging 11.7 points per game.

On the board, sophomore guard Anna Liewen is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game and sophomore Nea Makela is averaging 5.5 rebounds.

In Northern’s win over Malone on Dec. 7, Liewen left the game midway through the second half with what head coach Troy Mattson termed a potentially serious knee injury. She is out indefinitely.

The NMU men are 1-5 overall this season after losing both its GLIAC openers a week ago at home to Walsh and Malone.

The Wildcats men’s players are averaging 10-plus points per game, in freshman guard Marcus Hall (15), junior forward Justin Newell (11.8) and Dorrell Foster (10.5).

The Findlay men (4-1) split on the road to open GLIAC play with a win at Lake Superior State and loss at Northwood. Senior forward Greg Kahlig leads the Oilers in scoring, averaging 20.4 points per game with teammates junior forward Jake Heagen scoring 12.6 per outing and sophomore guard Alphonso Baity scoring 10 per game.

Like the NMU men, Hillsdale’s men’s team also came up empty the opening weekend of the GLIAC play with the Chargers falling to LSSU and Northwood. Senior forward Tim Dezelski averages 22.8 points per game to lead Hillsdale in scoring. Sophomore forward Kyle Coopers averages 10.8 points per game and senior guard Brandon Pritzl is scoring 10 per contest.

After Monday’s games in Hillsdale, both NMU basketball teams are off until the first weekend of 2014 when they host Tiffin on Jan. 2 and Ohio Dominican on Jan. 4.
