Northern Michigan University’s Griffin Loughran named WCHA’s top rookie of week

Griffin Loughran

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — After a huge game Friday night during the Northern Michigan University hockey team’s double-overtime win over Alaska Fairbanks in its WCHA first-round playoff series, there was little doubt that freshman forward Griffin Loughran would win some sort of award this week.

He ended up earning the WCHA Rookie of the Week award thanks to his one-goal, two-assist performance against the Nanooks.

Loughran assisted on the Wildcats’ first goal, which tied the game 1-1 in the second period, and after NMU fell behind 4-2, he connected on a power-play goal early in the third period to cut the deficit to one.

Loughran saved his best for last, though. In the second overtime, he weaved his way around the back of the Alaska net and sent a pass across the crease to Joseph Nardi, who fired in the winning goal for the 5-4 victory.

This is Loughran’s second Rookie of the Week award this year and Northern’s 12th weekly award as a team.

The Wildcats host No. 15 Bowling Green State in a best-of-three series in the WCHA semifinals this weekend at the Berry Events Center. Game times are 7:07 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, along with Sunday if a third game is necessary.
